Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) is a tax you must pay whenever you buy a property valued at over £125,000. Like many taxes it’s progressive, and like all taxes it’s inescapable, so you should therefore factor it into your calculations when you’re working out how much it will cost you to move home. The Chancellor of the Exchequer made substantial changes to the Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) system in his winter statement of 2014, so if you haven’t bought a property since then you probably need to update your knowledge of the way things work.

As of April 2015, Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) isn’t applicable to property purchases in Scotland. Instead, you’ll be liable for a charge called Land and Buildings Transaction Tax, and this is levied on all purchases over £145,000.
